Cross-linguistic aspects of intonation perception

This paper compares the perception strategies employed by the speakers of British English, Japanese and Russian in sentence type processing relying on prosodic clues. The paper reports the results of an experimental phonetic study investigating the effect of the manipulations of pitch and duration in a phonetically rising-falling contour on sentence type perception by the three groups of subjec...

Towards robust cross-linguistic comparisons of phonological networks

Recent work has proposed using network science to analyse the structure of the mental lexicon by viewing words as nodes in a phonological network, with edges connecting words that differ by a single phoneme. Comparing the structure of phonological networks across different languages could provide insights into linguistic typology and the cognitive pressures that shape language acquisition, evol...

Problems with click detection: Insights from cross-linguistic comparisons

Cross-linguistic comparisons may shed light on the levels of processing involved in the performance of psycholinguistic tasks. Perception of the moraic obstruent /Q/: a cross-linguistic study

Japanese natives segment speech into morae. Based on an informal interview, we hypothesized that Japanese natives rely on /Q/ that is represented as a silent duration. If so, it should be mor...

Cross-linguistic differences in the perception of palatalization

This was examined in two experiments with American English and Russian listeners. Results suggest that listeners' language does not influence auditory perception, but does affect the rated perceptual similarity of speech sounds.
